Somasheila Murthy completed her basic medical education at BYL Nair Charitable Hospital in Mumbai and her specialization in ophthalmology at Lokmanya Tilak Municipal Medical College, Mumbai. She did two clinical fellowships: one in cornea from LVPEI and the other in uveitis and ocular pathology from Doheny Eye Institute at the University of Southern California, Los Angeles, USA before joining LVPEI as faculty. Her areas of clinical expertise include uveitis, diseases of the cornea and anterior segment and refractive surgery. Her research interests include uveitis, ocular pathology and clinical research. She has over nine years of experience in conducting clinical trials as a principal or co- investigator, and has participated in over 20 clinical trials. She is an active member of the administrative teams for the clinical research and internal quality control departments. She is also involved in training programs, which include phacoemulsification training and teaching programs for DNB students and fellows at the institute. She has given over a hundred talks at national and international fora, and has authored and coauthored several peer-reviewed publications in ophthalmology journals and books.
